Sketchy Holidaze

The first of the sketches from Thursday's session are in, some great portraits from Christopher Batten.

And here's some typically sweet sketches from Jim Anderson.

You can see some photos on the Scarab Club's Facebook page, too.

Some news from our models: Don't forget to mark your calenders to see the Dizzy Dames perform at Cliff Bell's on January 24. Check out this interview with the Dames on the Motor City Rocks blog.

Happy Holidays everyone!

A quick note to say THANKS to everyone who came out to the Scarab Club last night for the year-end Dr. Sketchy session. It was a pretty damned good one, if I say so myself! Thanks again to Os Clavlitos for playing and of course many many thanks to the fantastic Rokzi and Lushes for modeling and performing. More info to come on their upcoming show with Dizzy Dames, and more photos and drawings from last night as they start rolling in.

For now I wanted to post a link to the publisher I mentioned last night, Baby Tattoo Books. Seriously, anyone who's into Dr. Sketchy will find something they'll like from these guys, take a look.

It's A Very Sketchy Christmas, Art Monkeys!

Hey all, just a reminder that we'll be getting together one last time in '09, THURSDAY, DEC. 17, 7-10PM, and a great time it looks to be, too.

We'll gather at the amazing, historic Scarab Club again (same place as in August for the anniversary session) to coincide with their cocktail night. We'll have two wonderful models from the Dizzy Dames burlesque troupe, both of whom will perform during the evening - PLUS: Live music from Latin jazz group Os Clavelitos - a Detroit Dr. Sketchy first! Speaking of cocktails, bartender Steve Ellis promises a re-invented version of the Dr. Sketchy martini will debut tomorrow as well.

Of course there's a neato prize package to be raffled off, some sweet goodies to share, and a cool crowd of art monkeys to hobnob with, all for a measly $5! How better to end the year? Don't miss it!

Also, speaking of the Scarab Club, check out this video by the guys at Motor City Blog from August's anniversary session! (I won't be offended if you fast-forward past me to see Lily LaRue's fan dance...)

Dr. Sketchy Holiday Bash @ the Scarab Club Dec. 17!

Hi all,

Big plans afoot in December! For our year-end holiday session Dr. Sketchy returns to the historic Scarab Club in Detroit, right behind the Art Institute. If you were at our anniversary session in August you'll remember what a great venue it is and what a blast we had. Once again we'll be piggy-backing on the Club's Third Thursday cocktail night on December 17th. The evening starts at 6pm - come early and socialize with club patrons and fellow art monkeys - and the sketching begins at 7pm. (Heck, come really early and make an art day of it! Go to the DIA, have dinner at Good Girls Go To Paris Crepes or Wasabi, and do some last-minute holiday shopping at Leopold's Books, all walking distance from the Scarab Club!)

Again we'll have two models for the evening: Lushes LaMoan returns (she graced the Belmont stage back in April) and she's bringing a friend, Rokzi Sokzov! They're both with the Detroit Dizzy Dames burlesque troupe. (Check 'em out at the New Way Bar on Dec. 11th!)

More goodness is in the works, including sweet prizes raffles, snacks, drinks, and maybe a charity event of some sort. Stay tuned!

More November Sketchiness

Here from Jim...

...and Paul. Thanks guys!

More November Sketchy art

...this time from Britt Martin (check out the amazing fantasy art on his site!)

Also, Britt reminds me, if you liked the album playing toward the end of the session as much as he and I and Kat do, the band is called Cocorosie and the album is "The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn." Cool quirky stuff.

Kat collage

Here's a sweet collection of sketches of Kat from the November session by Jennifer. (Click on it to see it nice and large)

Sketchy Marches On!

Wish I'd gotten some photos of Kat's baton-twirling majorette act last night! As it is I only got snaps of her in fetish and kitty-cat modes. Matt sent a sketch in, though - send your pictures to share here too.

I dropped off a ton of food at the Friendship House today (along with some backpacks and book bags I bought with a cash donation) and they were surprised and pleased and very grateful, so many many thanks to all who contributed. It'll mean a lot to some needy local folks.

Thanks also to Blick's, Green Brain and Matt Feazell for help with prizes!

Now it's on to planning for the end-of-year session, hopefully back at the Scarab Club. Stay tuned...

Oh, and I want to organize another exhibit of Dr. Sketchy drawings and photos at the Cafe 1923 here in Hamtown, so if you're interested in exhibiting let me know soon!

November Sketchy THIS WEDNESDAY!

Remember, Dr. Sketchy comes a bit early this month - WEDNESDAY, NOV. 18 from 7-10pm at the Belmont in Hamtramck. On stage this month is Noir Leather's fantastic Kat!

And don't forget, we'll be collecting cans and boxes of food to donate to Friendship House, for the benefit of needy folks here in Hamtown. Your food donation will get you a little gift from Blick's Art Materials and enters you in a drawing for a swell prize package as well. (You'll still need to pay $5 to sketch, and be sure to bring tip and drink money too.) See you soon!

November Sketchy comes early!

Like, really soon, like next Wednesday, Nov. 18th! We'll be at the Belmont from 7pm until 10pm (but stick around for karaoke night after!)

Our model will be Noir Leather's Kat Fegley, with a baton-twirling majorette theme to open the proceedings!

In light of the Thanksgiving holiday I'm declaring this session a charity event to benefit Friendship House, "a community resource network of 'neighbors helping neighbors'" here in Hamtramck. Please when you come next Wednesday bring a little something to help them out (I'll still be collecting the $5 model's fee, but maybe I'll have a goodie to give you in return for your generosity). The easiest thing would be to bring a few cans of food, boxes of cereal or the like (there are a couple of markets across from the Belmont for your convenience), but there's a long list of things they need on their website if you feel like bringing something else.

So - cool! I'll see you at 7pm at the Belmont next Wednesday!

More spooktacular art

Jennifer Rose Evans sent this collage of sketches from our session with Lisa on Thursday (click it to enlarge and get a better look). Not only was it her first Sketchy, she says it was her first time working from a formal live model! You can see more of her work on her Deviant Art site.

UPDATE: Just got these great studies from DS repeat customer Kevin, too.

DS October: Lisa and the Spiders from Mars

It was a full house at Blick's in Dearborn last night, listening to creepy stories and silly songs on the Halloween satellite radio and sketching Lisa as she lounged on her skull throne, battled giant arachnids and ate treats. Many thanks as always to everyone who came out, and special thanks to Paul and the staff at Blick for having us and supplying the swell raffle prizes! Here's some art, two by me and three more by regular contributer John. Send yours!

Also, as I mentioned last night, Hatch, the art collective based in Hamtramck, is trying to drum up new members. We're in the process of renovating the old police station in town to convert it to an arts center with gallery, studio and retail space. Find out more about Hatch at our website and consider joining up!

Next Dr. Sketchy: THURS. OCT. 29 6-9PM!

Hey all! So here it comes, the Halloween '09 Dr. Sketchy session, this time back at Blick Art Materials in Dearborn! Modeling this time will be Lisa, who heroically came to pose at the mini-Sketchy held at the People's Art Festival this past August. (Drawings of her here by friend-of-Sketchy Jim Anderson.) Lisa mentioned a "dead doll" costume she's been working on, so expect some seasonal creepiness! (And plenty of treats, too)

So mark your calendars - Thursday, October 29, from 6-9pm - and I'll give you more details as I nail them down.

More Hayley Jane from Sept. Dr. Sketchy

Just got back from a week's vacation, but here's some more excellent art from last month's session - pen sketches by Ray Stanczak and color collages by Doug Blanchard. Plans are afoot for October, so stay tuned.
