May Sketchy: See you tonight!
Here's your last-minute reminder: TONIGHT, Thursday May 20, it's Dr. Sketchy at the Scarab Club in Detroit featuring two amazing models - Vodou Vixen and Polly Glamourous - from the Detroit Dizzy Dames troupe! The weather should be nice so we'll be spending time drawing outdoors in the garden (and enjoying a surprise performance from the models, if all goes well). Plus there'll be light snacks, cool tunes and book giveaways courtesy Baby Tattoo Books. Sketchy at the Scarab is always a great time, with cocktails upstairs and lots of art-making fun downstairs, so be sure to join us from 7-10pm tonight!

May Flower Sketchy next week!
Hey everyone,
This is your one-week reminder that Dr. Sketchy is coming again to the historic Scarab Club in Detroit for a springtime celebration, next Thursday, May 20 from 7-10pm!
Weather permitting we'll be able to do some drawing in the Club's beautiful garden courtyard, then retire to the spacious gallery when the light fades. Modeling for us will be two new gals from the Detroit Dizzy Dames burlesque troupe, Vodou Vixen and Polly Glamourous!
Expect some "flower power"-themed surprises, as well as the Scarab Club's usual Third Thursday cocktail night hospitality, contests and prize giveaways(Baby Tattoo Books - and more??), psychedelic music, groovy goodies and who knows what else - and all for a mere $5! Tell your friends, and we'll see you next week!

May Flowers for the next Dr. Sketchy!
The next Sketchy is coming together! Mark your calendars: Thursday, May 20 at the Scarab Club in Detroit (right behind the DIA). The last couple SC events were big fun, and weather and sunlight permitting we'll be drawing in their beautiful garden for part of the night, so come celebrate spring and the coming summer with us! More info to come.

Dr. Sketchy April with Antha (and The Skipper toooo...)
Small turn-out this month (probably due to my last-minute planning), but much enthusiasm from those who did come to Skipper's in Hamtramck for the April Dr. Sketchy with Antha. Skipper's accommodated us nicely and Antha was a champ of course, despite an allergy attack! Here's a sample of the results, from Kateri, Jennifer and John, with photos by Agnes.
(And sorry it's taken so long to post these. Work kinda ate my brain this week, as you might imagine when you see how large the Metro Times Best of Detroit issue is.)

NEXT SKETCHY THIS THURS. APR. 15!
Hi all,
Sorry this is going out so last minute but everything finally came together yesterday, so here it is:
The Dr. Sketchy Tax Relief Session*
THIS THURSDAY, April 15 from 7-10pm at a new location:
Skipper's Hamtown
9735 Conant Street, Hamtramck, at the corner of Evaline: (313) 974-6883
Skipper is new to Hamtramck but he's long been involved with the Detroit-area arts community - his previous bar was a big hangout for local artists - so he's glad to host us for the night! The beer selection is great there, as is the jukebox, and there's a nice big space in the back for posing and sketching. (*Admission is still $5 - tax-free!)
Our model for the night is Antha, returning after nearly a year to the Dr. Sketchy stage!
So I hope to see you all there this Thursday, and spread the word!
-Sean
PS: We'll be back at the Scarab Club in Detroit on Thursday, May 20, hopefully in time for some nice weather and lounging in their garden area.

More from March: Stay tuned for spring!
Plans are afoot for upcoming Sketchy sessions in April (Hamtramck) and May (the Scarab Club in Detroit), but until I get the dates and models firmed up, here's a few more drawings of Red Hot Annie from March by Sketchy newcomer Anne Fracassa.
And there's even more great stuff over at Jim Anderson's blog.

Dr Sketchy March: Red Hot Annie!
Many thanks to everyone who turned out for this month's Dr. Sketchy, and the opening of the Hatchback 4 art show at Cafe 1923 this past weekend. It was another packed house, with great art to ponder on the walls, good music afterwards and an unexpected supply of Valentine's candy on hand to boot. Best of all was Chicago's Red Hot Annie — either in yellow dress and feathers or fishnets and top hat, she was lovely and a joy to draw! Here's a sample, with photos by Hatch prez Chris Schneider...
and art from DS regular Jennifer...
and myself (my first attempts to use my newly-acquired tablet PC).
The Hatchback show is up all month, check it out if you get a chance!

Sketchy sketchbooks
Tonight's session at the Cafe 1923 was a big hit! But before I get into that, I had to right away post these amazing Lana-based sketchbook drawing/collages from the always-great Doug Blanchard. Check out his website for more of the same sort of awesomeness.

Dr. Sketchy February: Lana Returns!
Lousy weather and all, we had a great turnout at last night's Dr. Sketchy, including five first-time sketchers! Many thanks to all who showed up to draw Lana, even while she was shimmying away.
Special thanks and congratulations to newcomer Heidi for taking her first bellydancing lesson right there in front of everybody! She did get a prize for her courage, though - enjoy your dinner at Toast and your illustration book from Baby Tattoo Books, Heidi.
First in with a sketch is Jennifer, who's become a regular and turned in a few lovely drawings. Send more, everyone!
And if you enjoy seeing what other art monkeys come up with at Dr. Sketchy, be sure to take a look at the DS art blog, and contribute your own sketches there too so the world can see what we got going on here in Detroit.
Next up: Red Hot Annie all the way from Chicago at the opening for the Hatchback 4 art exhibit at Hamtramck's Cafe 1923. That'll be on Saturday, March 6 from 5-7(ish)pm. See you there!

DR. Sketchy TOMORROW Thurs. Feb. 25!
Hey Sketchers, here's your day-before reminder about the Dr. Sketchy session happening tomorrow night, THURSDAY, FEB. 25, from 7-10pm at the Belmont bar, near the corner of Belmont and Jos. Campau in Hamtramck.
Returning to the Dr. Sketchy stage is bellydancer Lana Mini, fresh off her appearance on the Craig Fahle show on WDET earlier this week! Listen in here.
Admission is still only $5, and we'll have the usual prizes, music and goodies as well. Hope to see you there!

Dr. Sketchy news (finally!)
Hello again Art Monkeys,
Sorry for the long delay since the last DS update, but I finally have some news to report:
First, if you haven't seen it yet, go grab a copy of this week's Metro Times Valentine's Day special "Lust" issue. It features two-time Sketchy model Lushes LaMoan of the Dizzy Dames burlesque troupe on the cover and inside on the feature story spread! If you can't find a hard copy, check out the MT site.
Next, there are some Dr. Sketchy sessions coming up very soon! I'm planning one now for Thursday, February 24 featuring the return of bellydancer extraordinaire Lana. Details to come as I firm up the plans, so stay tuned. (Meanwhile, you can pick up some pointers from Lana's bellydance how-to DVD!)
Also coming up will be our usual special session at the opening of Hatch's annual juried art exhibit, Hatchback. This will be on Saturday, March 6, from 5-7pm at the Cafe 1923 in Hamtramck, and will star a special guest model from Chicago, Red Hot Annie!
So lots to look forward to in the coming weeks (including more giveaways from our 2010 Baby Tattoo books!).
Lastly, here's a question for everyone: Would you be willing to venture to downtown Wyandotte if I were to arrange a session there? We have a generous offer to bring the gig to the excellent River's Edge Gallery, and I'd love to take them up on it some time in the next couple months. Take a look at their site and let me know what you think.
More info to come, talk to you soon!

More great art from the Xmas session
...this time a happy pencil sketch from Hamtramck cartoonist Suzanne Baumann!
Speaking of cartoonists, check out what comics shop Green Brain in Dearborn has going on this week in their art gallery: an exhibit of re-imagined comic book covers by a variety of artists including me and Sketchy regular Matt Feazell. The opening is this Wednesday night.

Dr. Sketchy Detroit in 2010
Happy New Year everyone. Here's the latest in Dr. Sketchy news:
DS will take a hiatus in January so I can get caught up on new duties with the arts group Hatch, but plans are afoot for an awesome Valentine's Day session, so stay tuned for details.
In the meantime, you can get your Dr. Sketchy fix by checking out the blog for art from last year's sessions (art above by Jennifer Rose Evans), and posting some of your own work on Dr. Sketchy New York's new group art blog!
Also, be sure to have a look at our sponsor Baby Tattoo Books to peruse their awesome catalog of art books.
And remember to check out the Dizzy Dames burlesque troupe at Cliff Bell's on January 24
Thanks again to everyone who made Dr. Sketchy so much fun in '09, and watch for even more in 2010. Best wishes to you all,
Sean

Sketchy Holidaze
The first of the sketches from Thursday's session are in, some great portraits from Christopher Batten.
And here's some typically sweet sketches from Jim Anderson.
You can see some photos on the Scarab Club's Facebook page, too.
Some news from our models: Don't forget to mark your calenders to see the Dizzy Dames perform at Cliff Bell's on January 24. Check out this interview with the Dames on the Motor City Rocks blog.
