DS April: Lushness & Sprockethole!

And finally, I get their names right (sorry for the confusion, ladies!).

In any case, many thanks to our lovely and fun models from this last Thursday. After a springtime weather-inspired late start, we had a good turnout and a lively session, with Lushness and Sprockethole sharing the spotlight both separately and together. Take a look: First, photos by Agnes (more of her work on her Flickr page)...

Next a few by DS regular customer Kevin:

A couple from Yers Trooly:

And finally, some colorful samples from James Anderson (more of his work here):

Always room for more, so send me something!

Also: Quick shout of "thanks" to Real Detroit for plugging the event this week!

Also also: I just wanna say that, as much as I nag about it, you Detroit Art Monkeys are always very generous about feeding the tip jar at our events, and it's always greatly appreciated - by the models of course, but also by me. Besides being a boon for the folks on stage, it's just one more little thing that helps build Dr. Sketchy Detroit's rep as a fun and positive force in town, and I thank you kindly.

Next session is Thursday May 14 back at the Belmont, watch for details!

Don't forget: Dr. Sketchy this Thursday!

Dr. Sketchy is back at the Belmont in Hamtramck this week - Thursday, April 16, 7-10 pm - with not one but two lovely models on the schedule; Lisa Legion and Lily Lolipop of Detroit's Spag Burlesque troupe will be sharing the posing duties. Check the labels on your pencils and sketchbooks to make sure they're rated for this much awesome. See you there!

Tax Relief DS style: Next Session is April 16!

Swing by the Belmont in Hamtramck on Thursday, April 16th from 7-10pm to put tax season behind you and unwind with an evening of music, drinks, good company and Sketchy-style figure drawing. Next month we hope to have a model from local cabaret phenoms Spag Burlesque gracing the stage. Stay tuned for more details soon.

The Ides of March came early...

...and Muana dressed the part, in full-on Roman Imperial regalia! (And later in a sort of '60s spy movie villain outfit, as lightning flashed behind her in the cafe window.) Photos by Agnes Domanska, drawings by John Nagridge.

Dr. Sketchy, Hatchback 3, Blowout '09 - Saturday!

Just your day-before reminder that tomorrow, SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 5-8PM, is Dr. Sketchy time again. We'll be gathering at the Cafe 1923 on Holbrook in Hamtramck (across from the giant neon Kowalski sausage) to draw the one and only Muana and kick off the opening of Hatchback 3, the third annual juried art show sponsored by the Hamtown art collective Hatch. Come for the sketching, stay for the art, come early and enjoy the many activities the cafe has planned for Blowout weekend and stay out late to take in a rock show or two at Hamtramck's many watering holes. See you there!

Dr. Sketchy in Metro Times

The other night, some of you may have met Kelly Lockwood, who shoots photos for the Velvet Rope club scene section of the Metro Times. Well, a few of the photos are in today's print edition (go to the Night & Day listings section to find them), and many more are online at the Metro Times web site. There's also several spiffy shots there of a recent performance by Torch With A Twist. More of Kelly's Velvet Rope shots are at MT's Flickr site as well.

Feb=Fab: Last night @ Dr. Sketchy

Good turn-out and good times last night, thanks to everyone who came, new and old! Bonus points for the few who hung around afterwards, including our model Demonique, to belt out some karaoke (those of you who didn't missed my Elvis Costello impersonation). Props also to Demonique for what I think is a world-wide Dr. Sketchy first: I've seen sexy nurses, sexy cops, sexy maids and what-not, but the sexy Soviet air force pilot look has to be a new one.

Agnes has already sent photos! Send more sketches and snaps, all.

Also, please feel free to let me know if you have any suggestions for future DS sessions - models, sets & props, locations, music, anything you think would keep things fresh and fun.

Details on next month's show on Saturday, March 7 to come.

Dr. Sketchy Wed. Feb. 18 @ The Belmont!

Hey all, hope your Valentine's weekend was a fun one.

Here's your night-before warning of another impending Dr. Sketchy session! Demonique will grace the stage at the Belmont bar in Hamtramck, and it sounds like the theme for the night will be "tough gals!" She has a few interesting costume choices lined up, so you'll for sure want to be there.

FYI, I've been putting out flyers for this session in a few spots around town - The Belmont, Blick's, Utrecht, Cafe 1923, and maybe most importantly at the Dirty Show downtown on this past Saturday. It's an experiment to see if we can recruit new folks to the event, and if it works it might be slightly crowded, so I suggest getting there early! We'll see how it goes, and I'm sure we'll find room for everyone.

Oh, and I think a photographer for the Metro Times will be there! You could be in the newspaper! So wear clean underwear.

See you tomorrow night at 7pm! (And remember - karaoke night at the Belmont following the session, so warm up your vocal chords!)

PS: Speaking of the Dirty Show, check out Amy Palomar's photos from the show, including shots of Sketchy alum Lily LaRue and the Tickled Fancy troupe. (Shot for the very cool Motorcityblog.)

Next Sketchy: February 18th!

...with (for sure this time!) the always-amazing Demonique on stage! Feel free to share this announcement graphic around to invite your friends to come too (thanks for the art, Jim).

More Sweet stuff

Several great sketches from the other night at Blick's to share with you, from Matt Feazell...

...Suzanne Baumann...

...and Britt Martin. Thanks, everyone!

And if you missed the comment below, Laura reports that our impromptu warm-up model at the beginning of the night was one Todd McNulty of the local rock outfit Lee Marvin Computer Arm! And here's the link to Laura's photos of the evening, including a nice shot of Pedro the tip skull. There are even more photos over on Laura's Flickr site.

DS January: Sweet!

Thanks to everyone who braved the ridiculous cold and iffy roads and made it out to Blick Art Materials last Thursday for the first Dr Sketchy of Oh-Nine. (And special thanks to the Blick employee who filled in posing while our model made her way to Dearborn from Ypsi!)

Regina Sweet of Tickled Fancy Burlesque Co. did arrive eventually, complete with bunny ears, tutu and sexy country-girl outfit and pleased the crowd nicely, leaving Pedro, Blick's in-store plastic skull/impromptu tip jar, up to his eye sockets in dollar bills. Here's two from Kevin Hsieh, including one of our impromptu fill-in model.

And a couple from Jim Anderson too.

Remember, Tickled Fancy will perform in Detroit on March 15, at the Trumbullplex down by Wayne State University, a strange and intimate venue perfect for edgy cabaret performance.

ALSO: Dr. Sketchy returns on Wednesday, February 18, at our good ol' HQ, the Belmont in Hamtramck (come for the sketching, stay for the karaoke!); and again in Hamtown on March 7 at the Café 1923 to launch Hatch's third annual Hatchback art exhibit. So clear your schedule!

...and send more photos and art!

Dr. Sketchy Detroit 2009!

Hey all,

Here to remind you, we'll be congregatin' at Blick Art Materials THIS THURSDAY FROM 6-9PM for the first Dr. Sketchy of 2009!

The last session at Blick's was a big hit, and you don't have to worry about running out of art supplies during the night! Expect cool contest prizes, too.

And here's a surprise: we've got a brand new model! Demonique had to work, so instead we'll be hosting Ms. Regina Sweet of the Tickled Fancy Burlesque Troupe out of Ann Arbor! Check 'em out on Myspace here.

So expect a fantastic model, good company, cool contest prizes, and another good night of sketching.

If you could all do me a favor and send me an email so I can get an idea of a head count, I'd be much obliged. I expect some folks to come thanks to Blick's promoting the event, and I hope to get the same mixed group we had last time we were there.

Thanks, see you in a couple days!

Sean

Next Dr. Sketchy: January 15, 2009!

Hi Sketchers & friends! Hope the holidays are treating everyone well.

Three things from me:

First: A huge year-end thank you to everyone who's helped make Dr. Sketchy so much fun this year, despite some glitches in the scheduling of late. Whether you're a regular or just a once-in-a-while participant, it's because of you art monkeys, models and other supporters that this thing happens, and I'm really grateful for your participation.

Second: Dr. Sketchy is set to get back on track now that the holiday craziness is behind us. Our next session is scheduled for:

THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 6-9PM
at Blick Art Materials
14339 Michigan Ave, Dearborn, MI 48126
(313) 581-7063

Modeling will be Dr. Sketchy friend and recent Metro Times cover model Demonique Damzelle!

Last time we were at Blick's, drawing bellydancer Lana, we had a great crowd of DS regulars and Blick customers discovering DS for the first time. Expect tight quarters, snacks and music, and don't worry about running out of pencils or markers or... pretty much anything, actually! Admission is the usual $5 (cheap!).

Lastly: Dr. Sketchy Detroit has been doing well mainly by word of mouth so far, but I'm really hoping spread the DS gospel in the coming months - passing out postcards and flyers, posting online and otherwise promoting the event. I'm also going to try to get even more local burlesque and cabaret acts and performers involved. SO - if you know anyone who we should hire to model, a group we should contact or a venue who'd like to host us, or if you'd just like to help get the word out to schools, arts groups, etc., please let me know!

Thanks again, and expect more info as we get closer to Jan. 15. Hope the new year is good to you,

Sean

DS22: Hansel? Hansel... Hansel??

Photos from Agnes Domanska of models Chris and Anna's campy-vampy version of Hansel & Gretel, among other creepiness.

Speaking of cool pin-up photography, take a look at this web site from Kit Kymla, who with luck will join us at the next Sketchy.

More Halloween treats

More sketches, first one from Matt Feazell, then one from me, and a couple from Kevin Hsieh. Photos from Agnes Domanska to come.
